Patek Philippe
Patek Philippe & Co. is one of the most famous and expensive brands of wrist watches in the world. Patek Philippe is currently owned by the Stern family and is led by Henri Stern and his son. Many watch collectors regard Patek Philippe timepieces as the best in the world. Over the years, Patek Philippe watches have been worn by a number of notable individuals, including members of royalty, movie stars and tycoons. Albert Einstein was also a customer. They are famous for manufacturing most of their own components, Lusso Magazine said, "Most Swiss watchmakers buy in the parts which they then proceed to assemble in their own premises. Patek does no such thing. Instead they manufacture all of their own parts and assemble them in their own building."
History
Antoni Patek started making pocket watches in 1839 in Geneva, along with his fellow Polish migrant Franciszek Czapek. They separated in 1844, and in 1845 Patek joined with the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of the keyless winding mechanism. In 1851, Patek Philippe & Co was founded.
In 1868, Patek Philippe made their first wristwatch. They have also pioneered the perpetual calendar, split-seconds hand, chronograph and minute repeater in watches. The company has produced quartz watches in the past and even a digital wrist watch, the Ref. 3414.
Most expensive
Patek Philippe produced an ultra-complicated (with 24 functions) pocket-watch for Henry Graves, Jr., who entered into a friendly horological competition with James Ward Packard, which resulted in the production of the watch sold to Mr. Graves in 1933. After his death, the watch was auctioned at Sotheby's in December 1999 for USD$11,000,000, at that time the most expensive timepiece ever sold. On April 10, 2008, 2003 "Ref. 5002P Sky Moon Tourbillon" platinum Patek Philippe tourbillon wristwatch made the world record as the most expensive modern wristwatch sold at Hongkong Sotheby's for HK$11.75 million ($1.49 million). It erased the previous record of Vacheron Constantin Tour de l'Ile sold at Antiquorum for $1.4 million in Geneva in 2005.
Ownership by royalty
Patek Philippe watches have enjoyed great demand among discerning collectors and watch connoisseurs of a high social status and wealth. Since Queen Victoria’s reign, monarchs, popes, political leaders and rulers have purchased timepieces manufactured by the brand either for their personal use or as a precious gift to be presented to an important guest, or in recognition of someone's remarkable bravery and loyalty.
In 1851, Patek Philippe started supplying its watches to Queen Victoria and her consort. Timepieces of the Genevan manufacture immediately attracted attention of all the royal courts of Europe. Queen Victoria acquired a key-wound Patek Philippe watch created in a pendant style in November 1851 during the Great Exhibition of London. Queen Victoria owned one more exclusive Patek Philippe timepiece to be worn pinned to clothing. The watch suspended from a diamond and enamel brooch.
The list of Patek Philippe noble clientele also highlights Pope Pius IX, Christian IX and Louise (the king and queen of Denmark), Victor-Emanuel III (king of Italy and Duke of Savoy), and Hussein Kamal (prince of Egypt in the period of 1914-1917).
Anniversary edition
In 1989, Patek created one of the most complicated mechanical watches ever made, the Calibre 89, created for the 150th anniversary of the company. It holds 33 complications, including the date of Easter, a thermometer, time of sunrise, equation of time, sidereal time, and many other indicators. 1,728 unique parts allow sidereal time a 2,800 star chart, and more.[5] The Calibre 89 is also able to add a day to February for leap years while leaving out the extra day for every 100 year interval.
Patek Philippe is also renowned in the watch auction circles, and their timepieces have recorded high closing prices worldwide. A large part of the demand for auction pieces is driven by Patek Philippe themselves, as they are often purchasing in the auction market to add to the collection of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.
Patek Philippe produces a number of collectible watches. In the 150 year history of the company, they have produced approximately 600,000 timepieces in total — less than the annual production of Rolex.[citation needed] (Rolex makes about 650,000-800,000 annually. http://www.stern.nyu.edu/Sternbusiness/fall_winter_2004/rolex.html
In 2005 the company introduced the revolutionary Silicon escapement wheel to the industry.

Dream Machines: the SLR Chronograph by TAG Heuer and The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
To celebrate the launch of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren super sports car, TAG Heuer and Mercedes-Benz have combined forces and know how to produce a stunning commemorative timepiece exclusively for Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren car owners.
The SLR Chronograph by TAG Heuer, like the high-performance, 200-mph, ultra-luxury sports car that inspired it, is an audacious creation, at the avant-garde of high technology and design, yet with the look and allure of a true classic. The direct result of TAG Heuer’s historic relationship with McLaren Mercedes, the SLR Chronograph reflects the values common to both the brand and the team: passion, performance and sporting prestige. Like the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the SLR chronograph combines a unique mechanical movement together with a daring inspiring design.
TAG Heuer and Team McLaren Mercedes: A Successful Partnership
Starting in 1985, the year TAG Heuer signed its partnership with the Formula 1 team, the two groups have worked side by side, creating not only one of the longest-running associations between a leading racing team and a luxury company in the history of Formula One, but also one of the most successful: six Constructors’ World Championship titles, eight Drivers’ titles (three with Alain Prost in 1985, 1986 and 1989, three with Ayrton Senna in 1988, 1990 and 1991 and two with Mika Häkkinen in 1998 and 1999).
The winning relationship goes back earlier still, to 1955, when Juan-Manual Fangio drove the original Mercedes-Benz SLR through the tight hairpin bends of one of the most gruelling road races in the history of motorsport: the 1000-mile Mille Miglia. During this race and all others, Fangio wore on his wrist, like every F1 World Champion since, a TAG Heuer, then named Heuer, timepiece.
Today, the TAG Heuer/McLaren Mercedes partnership is stronger than ever. All McLaren Mercedes cars carry TAG Heuer technology, not just in F1 but at all professional levels of the sport. McLaren Mercedes drivers and TAG Heuer Brand Ambassadors Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard, like their predecessors Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Mika Häkkinen, endorse TAG Heuer timepieces at every race or testing session. They also participate actively in the design and development of new TAG Heuer watches and functionalities.
In 2004 and to celebrate 20 years of partnership, TAG Heuer has renewed and extended its partnership with Team West McLaren Mercedes and its drivers, Kimi Raïkkönen and David Coulthard, becoming the team’s Corporate Partner and Official Timekeeper.
The SLR Chronograph by TAG Heuer: An exceptional, limited-edition chronograph for an exceptional, limited-edition supercar
Fluid lines, high end internally developed manufacture movement, perfection-driven architecture, unconventional styling, leading-edge ergonomic design: the SLR chronograph, like the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren to which it pays tribute, is in a class all its own. Exclusively designed for Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren owners, the daring chronograph was designed and developed by TAG Heuer product development teams in Chaux-de- Fonds, together with the Geneva watchmaker, Jean-François Ruchonnet. The idea for the chronograph was conceived in the F1 paddock during an encounter between TAG Heuer CEO and President Jean-Christophe Babin and the director of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Project, Klaus Nesser.
It draws on the unique design acumen of the world's most prestigious luxury-car manufacturer and the engineering and horological savoir-faire of the world's most prestigious maker of luxury sports watches.
The SLR Chronograph by TAG Heuer: Daring and Classic, Innovative and Traditional, a Superwatch for a Supercar.
The two logos – the TAG Heuer shield and the star of Mercedes-Benz – grace the black dial, which looks like a sports car dashboard. The two SLR “gill” patterns stamped at 3 o’clock pay homage to the car’s signature side-mounted exhausts, an echo of the 1950s SLRS. Another unique touch is the off-centred date counter at 7:30. Under the hood lies the peerless Calibre 36 automatic movement. Like the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren’s hand-built, supercharged 626-hp V8 engine, this is an exceptional source of power. The only 1/10 of a second automatic chronograph, beating at 36.000 alternances/, it is the standard-bearer of TAG Heuer’s watchmaking tradition. Yet it also represents an exciting new innovation, unique to the SLR Chronograph: the Calibre 36 has been specially outfitted by TAG Heuer watchmakers with a regulator that provides the TAG Heuer SLR’s dial the look and utility of a sports-car dashboard, with individual gauges for each function. All of which can be read simultaneously. Therefore it’s name: Calibre 36 Regulator
For reading the time, the hour hand has been shifted to the counter at 12 o'clock, while the hand at the center of the dial displays minutes and the counter at 9 o'clock displays seconds. For chronograph functions, the 6 o'clock counter displays hours, the 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock displays minutes and seconds sweep by on the central hand.
Another inspiration drawn from the prestigious sports car is the unique placement of the timepiece’s chronograph push buttons on the top of the fine-brushed stainless-steel case. This extraordinary ergonomic innovation – a first in the world of watchmaking – mirrors the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren’s unique steering wheel gearshift. Water resistant to 50 meters, the polished crown is adorned with the Mercedes-Benz logo, while the caseback is engraved with a limited edition number.
The SLR Chronograph is 14mm thick, with a diameter of 40 mm from 3 to 9 o’clock. Both sides of the sapphire crystal are treated with an anti-reflective coating. The dial is black and the stylish strap is in crocodile leather, with a folding, push-button buckle. Luminous markers give added visibility to the hands.
Fusing tradition and innovation, true classicism and cutting-edge invention, this is the unique – and exclusive – timepiece for Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren prestigious sports car owners, a timepiece as expressive and super-charged as the car they drive.

Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 360 LS
Baselworld 2006 was the prestigious setting for the launch of the next evolutionary phase of TAG Heuer’s 1/100th of a second chronograph technology : the Monaco Calibre 360 LS (Linear Second) Concept Chronograph, a daring new timepiece with an all-new architecture proudly exposing its unrivalled Calibre 360 LS precision technology.
Inspired by the revolutionary monaco v4

bridges to reveal the critical functions:
Oversized 1/100th of a second chronograph counter exterior to the chronograph
engine
2. 15-minute chronograph counter embedded in the chronograph engine
3. 100-minute power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, similarly embedded

Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 360 Rose Gold limited edition
Unveiled at Baselworld 2006 was the Carrera Calibre 360 Rose Gold, intended for privileged collectors seeking the most accurate mechanical timepiece ever made. It is a high-prestige version of 2005’s Calibre 360 Concept Chronograph, the first mechanical wrist chronograph to measure and display time to 1/100th of a second.
A luxury tribute to a racing legend...
As a tribute to TAG Heuer’s legendary Carrera series, its longstanding links to motor racing and peerless timekeeping heritage, the sober, easy-to-read details of this limited edition watch are inspired by TAG Heuer’s vintage stopwatches. They include the extra large start/stop push button, the enhanced fluted crown, the 100-minute power reserve at 12 o’clock, and the oversized 1/100th of a second counter at 6 o’clock.
Ten times faster than any other mechanical wristwatch movement...
The Calibre 360 is like a living organism endowed with two hearts - 2 sets of escapement mechanisms. Under normal conditions it cruises at the regular speed of 28,800 oscillations/hour, but in chronograph mode it accelerates to 360,000 oscillations/hour. To achieve this incredible precision requires over 230 components, a drastically lightened and miniaturized hairspring and escapement mechanism. Its development has produced no fewer than 3 exclusive worldwide patents:
1/100th of a second counter in a mechanical wrist chronograph
Bi-directional crown and rewind system. The single crown controls both movements, as well as the hour and date setting : turned clockwise, it rewinds the manual chronograph; turned counter-clockwise, it rewinds the automatic watch.
Transmission of the date from the bottom of the movement to the upper dial.
A special limited edition of 500 pieces.
The exceptional Calibre 360 movement is completed with the luxurious design, materials, and craftsmanship it deserves: an elegant chocolate-brown guilloché dial with hand-applied 18 carat rose gold hands and indexes; 18 carat rose gold watch case, and chocolate-brown, hand-sewn alligator strap. The sapphire crystal case back offers a glimpse of the oscillating weight specially engraved with the movement’s name and beautifully decorated with Côtes de Genève waves.

The TAG Heuer Monaco V4
TAG Heuer Monaco V4: an amazing 36-month odyssey from concept watch to pre-series production, and an ongoing adventure that will involve many more approval and certification procedures prior to actually bringing the model to market...
Baselworld 2004: TAG Heuer took the watchmaking world by surprise when it launched a revolutionary concept-watch. The mechanical Monaco V4 overturned basic watchmaking principles by featuring driving belts and ball-bearings instead of the conventional wheels and pinions. Representing a daring move undertaken with the help of watchmaker Philippe Dufour, the Monaco V4 sprung a surprise, aroused admiration and raised immediate debate and questions. Opinions were divided: was it a real watchmaking breakthrough or just a marketing gimmick? The concept watch certainly left nobody indifferent.
Relive the Live Chat on the V4 with TAG Heuer CEO
After 36 months and thousands of hours of design, simulation and finally construction, TAG Heuer returns to Baselworld 2007. This time with not only a prototype that has turned out a remarkable performance over a year, confirming that toothed belts can be used instead of wheels and pinions, but also with some pre-series products that give an idea of the movement’s final construction. So when will it be ready? It’s a long road ahead because the V4 is still a TAG Heuer, and that means top-rate quality and performance in line with the products that have earned the brand its reputation since 1860.
The first pre-series prototypes were officially presented at Baselworld 2007. Above and beyond the product innovation and the confirmation that TAG Heuer is serious in its approach, it reveals a ground-breaking development process with a huge upstream application of mathematics, physics and computer simulations more akin to the aerospace industry than to traditional Swiss watchmaking. It also heralds the introduction into watchmaking of new skills and players from the world of the infinitely small that have helped TAG Heuer miniaturise and apply to timepieces the engineering and components usually developed in such other fields as medical and space technology.
After the presentation of the Monaco V4 Concept Watch in, the technical management had to review virtually all the functions of its revolutionary watchmaking concept. This was due to the kinetic complexities of the innovative mechanical approach and the results of the various studies carried out by the R&D department on the resilience of some components, which have to be able to work well in the long term at no extra cost to the consumer.
The new, and therefore unique, techniques applied to make this watch impose certain specific constraints. They required a total review of the traditional, and often empirical and repetitive approach to development, to arrive at a new development process relying heavily on mathematics, physics and computer simulation, before embarking on construction. Jean-Christophe Babin, TAG Heuer’s CEO, sums up the issue: “If you built an aircraft in the same empirical and iterative way as we have been making watches for the past four centuries, the chances that the plane will crash on the runway on the first test flight are relatively high, and would probably be detrimental to the commercial future of the project. That is why we have decided to review our procedures for the V4 entirely, rather than rush into construction and prototypes. We wanted above all to break down a watch movement into sub-assemblies and to simulate and validate each of them theoretically before thinking of making prototypes. Moreover the prototype that has been working for a year is the only one we have made. After all, why aim for an approximation when the power of modern computing and simulation tools enables a gradual approach to a theoretical design that is close to the ideal?”
Thousands of hours of simulation on powerful computers have therefore resolved and analysed the action of conventional movements, providing a scientific basis on which to model and replicate each module of the V4 movement within the physical and dynamic constraints of such new components as the transmission belts. Today, the Monaco V4’s architecture, although reconsidered, remains true to the spirit of the Concept Watch that created such a sensation. Some will find it similar overall, yet entirely different to the watch presented in 2004. Thus is the magic of creativeness when seen through a subjective lens. The fundamentals remain the same: belt drive, ball-bearings, linear oscillating-weight, spring barrels in a V configuration like the cylinders of a sports car.
In the present state of development, many of the transmission problems due to the materials used to make the toothed belts have been solved. The bulky toothed belts of the first generation have given way to new versions, only 7mm thick. These have teeth profiled to ISO norms rather than the NIHS (Swiss watchmaking) standards applied to most of the wheels and pinions of conventional watchmaking. To produce such belts for the prototypes, TAG Heuer applied advanced technologies such as Femto laser. For the pre-series models it used micro-injection techniques in moulds made to nanometre tolerances.
The functional validation phase of the synchronous belt-drive system and of the automatic winding by linear oscillating-weight is now completed. The next step is to certify the reliability of the complete pre-series prototypes. The movement prototype has now been working for more than a year with the same precision as a traditional mechanical movement. For form’s sake, each working component is thoroughly examined for several weeks under a high-definition cinecamera to check the viability of all the structural modifications that have been implemented.
To meet the stringent specifications of the Quality Department, the engineers have decided to reduce the number of toothed-belt transmissions, while refining them to improve efficiency and flexibility.
A large number of ISO involute gearings are now found in the movement, which delivers higher energy efficiency than a traditional mechanical movement.
A pre-series of 20 units is now in production and the first of these will be presented as a preview at Baselworld 2007. This pre-series, will be used, like those of the brand’s other products, to undergo the stringent tests of the quality department for which TAG Heuer has been granted Swiss patent CH 695 197 05, conferring official intellectual-property status on all the tests and equipment of the TAG Heuer laboratories. The aim is also to obtain a COSC chronometer certification for the V4.
A little more patience - there’s still a long way to go, but the dream is coming true.

Tag Hauer Aquaracer Calibre S Regatta CAF7110.BA0803
TAG Heuer has put all its avant-garde mechanical watchmaking expertise into quartz precision. The Calibre S, with its exclusive movement – patented and developed by TAG Heuer – makes a clean break with the traditional codes of the chronograph, which has used three hard-to-read counters since 1822.
The Calibre S allows for time to be read intuitively in a radically innovative, avant-garde fashion: the hour and chronograph functions are displayed by the central hands (hour, minute, second). With no fewer than 230 mechanical components and five bi-directional micro-engines, the Calibre S boasts unique functions:
Intuitive chronograph legibility with tenth-of-a-second precision.
Measurement of simple and intermediary time and two elapsed times.
Retrograde date with a perpetual calendar to 2099.
Countdown scale for regattas, configurable as desired from -10 to -1 minute.
Anti-clockwise movement of central hands in “REGATTA” mode, then clockwise once the countdown is over, as the Chronograph is triggered automatically.
Movement: TAG Heuer Calibre S, ELECTRO-MECHANICAL.
What does “electro-mechanical” mean?
A true hybrid, the electro-mechanical timepiece is an ingenious mix of mechanical watchmaking expertise and extraordinary quartz precision. With no fewer than 230 mechanical components and five bi-directional micro-engines, the Calibre S is a mechanical movement with quartz precision.
Function: The Calibre S has three modes: “HOUR”, “CHRONO” and “REGATTA”. A simple push on the crown is all it takes to go from one mode to the next. The three modes are displayed by the central hands (hour, minute, second), making legibility simple and intuitive. With its bi-directional micro-engines, the Calibre S allows the central hands to move anti-clockwise in the “REGATTA” mode. Once the countdown is over, the chronograph is automatically triggered and the central hands start moving clockwise. The dial of the Aquaracer Chrono Calibre S Regatta is adorned with two half-moon counters at 4:30 and 7:30:
In HOUR mode:
Equipped with a perpetual calendar to 2099, these counters indicate the date.
In CHRONO mode:
The left counter indicates “CHRONO” mode and the right counter tenth-of-a-second precision. “CHRONO” mode allows for the measurement of simple and intermediary time, and two elapsed times.
In REGATTA mode:
The left counter indicates “REGATTA” mode. When the countdown is over, the chronograph starts automatically. The left counter then indicates “CHRONO” mode and the right counter tenth-of-a-second precision.
Dial: Sophisticated and sporty. Luminescent markers for improved legibility in darkness. Monochrome TAG Heuer logo. “AQUARACER – Calibre S – 300 meters” inscription.
Hands: Set with diamonds with polished facets and coated with a luminescent material for improved legibility in darkness.
Case: Stamped in a block of solid steel with a diameter of 41 mm.
Crystal: Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
Bezel: Fixed aluminium bezel with countdown scale (from -10 to -1 minute) for regattas.
Case back: Screw-down case back assuring water-resistance up to 300 meters. Diving bell decoration stamped on case back.
Bracelet: Triple-row bracelet in satin-finish, polished steel. Double security clasp with folding blade and extension system allowing for the piece to be worn over a diving suit.

Tag Hauer Carrera
The “Carrera Panamericana” was an epic race that was started in the 1950s and attracted many of the leading drivers of the time. Juan Manuel Fangio, the famous Argentinian driver who was Formula 1 World Champion five times, won the race in 1953. To pay tribute to this unique adventure, in 1963 TAG Heuer launched the Carrera Chronograph that combined refinement with the spirit of sport. It was an immediate success. Tag Hauer Monaco
Monaco. A prestigious circuit whose original track is a very special experience for drivers. In 1969, in honor of this unique Grand Prix, TAG Heuer launched a chronograph with a new design. Its water-resistant square case - the first in watchmaking history - houses the Chronomatic, the world’s first automatic chronograph movement with a microrotor. Steve McQueen had an empathy for this audacious, rebellious watch and in 1970 chose to wear it in the film “Le Mans”, dedicated to motor racing. The Monaco has lost none of its originality and still embodies the avant-garde spirit that inspires TAG Heuer.
TAG Heuer History
Prestige, performance, avant-garde technology and absolute reliability: these four "watchwords" have characterized TAG Heuer philosophy since its founding in 1860, when Edouard Heuer set up the company's first workshop in St-Imier (Switzerland). Since that date, the firm's bold and innovative spirit, its dedication to the high-precision measurement of infinitesimal fragments of time and its quest for excellence in the design and fabrication of its products constitute the very soul of TAG Heuer. From its very first patent for a chronograph mechanism in 1882 to the introduction, in 2004, of a revolutionary new automatic movement (the Monaco V4), TAG Heuer continues to be at the forefront of some of the most spectacular innovations in watchmaking history.

It also features a Linear Second at 9 o’clock. Another principle design innovation is the way in which it displays this information.
TAG Heuer has developed an exclusive Rotating Scale that permits a precise reading of 1/10th of a second – magnified 10X! The new Titanium carbide-coated and rubber bracelet with folding buckle is another stunning innovation.
The super-sleek K.O. 7 sportscar was launched at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show together with the K.O. 8 coupé on March 4th, 2008 in the presence of Jean-Christophe Babin, TAG Heuer President & CEO and Ken Okuyama. The first mechanical automatic chronograph that measures and displays 1/10ths of a second…and the only timepiece in history to inspire and feature in a GT sportscar!
TAG Heuer has pulled off yet another world first: powered by a column wheel movement, the Grand CARRERA Calibre 36 RS Caliper Concept Chronograph is the only automatic chronograph capable of measuring and displaying 1/10ths of a second! Visible through a tinted double sapphire crystal, the COSC-certified movement oscillates at an astonishing 36,000 vibrations per hour. This enables the central seconds hand to tick off 1/10th second intervals, giving at-a-glance readings of an unparalleled exactitude – an engineering feat of the highest level.
The breathtaking new creation has a stylish 43mm, black titanium carbide-coated case, and a Calibre 36 RS movement with power reserve and two “Black Gold” Rotating Systems indicating the chronograph minutes at 3 o’clock and the chronograph hours at 6 o’clock.
Available in an exclusive limited edition of 99 vehicles, it will be showcased at the TAG Heuer booth throughout Baselworld 2008. An exceptional momentum celebrating TAG Heuer’s unique racing DNA as well as passion for advanced technology and design and unparallel support to avant-garde designers!
